This 1-day Family-Friendly Beginners sewing class is the perfect introduction If you’ve always wanted to learn to sew but didn’t know where to start. It’s perfect you, for you and your child if you’re complete beginners (or you haven’t touched a sewing machine since school). You’ll spend a relaxed, enjoyable day learning the essential skills you need to begin sewing with confidence.
This is a family‑friendly class designed for one adult and one child to learn together. Children must attend with an adult who will take part in the class. The aim is to help you both build the skills and confidence to continue sewing safely at home.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have made a beautiful lined tote bag to take home – a practical, stylish project that teaches you core skills you’ll use again and again.
What You’ll Learn on the Family-friendly Beginners Sewing Class
This Family-friendly crafts workshop is designed to build confidence gently, with clear demonstrations, step‑by‑step guidance and plenty of hands‑on practice. You’ll learn:
- how to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin
- how to adjust stitch length, width and tension
- how to sew straight lines, corners and curves
- how to press and finish seams neatly
- how to measure, cut and prepare your fabric
- how to construct a fully lined tote bag with straps
- how to troubleshoot common sewing issues
You’ll leave with a finished bag and the skills to start sewing together independently at home.
What We’ll Make
You’ll create a fully lined tote bag – a brilliant first project that teaches essential sewing techniques without being overwhelming. This project is achievable for complete beginners from age 8+, but is still satisfying and impressive to take home.

- sewing machines (but you can bring your own if you have one)
- fabrics and linings

Continue Your Sewing Journey
This session is designed to be a fun, relaxed introduction to sewing for children. We keep things simple so everyone enjoys the day. If you’d like to learn the more detailed techniques that help you support your child with future projects, I’d love to welcome you back to one of my adult sewing classes — that’s where we cover all the technical bits properly. The next step for adults (or accompanied children aged 14-15) is the Beginners Sewing Course XL. You’ll obtain a much deeper introduction to sewing and I especially recommend this course if you’d like to move into dressmaking. It’s available over 2 whole days or in 6 weekly parts either weekdays or evenings so you learn in small chunks. And it’s still lots of fun!
Many students who start with the Tote Bag workshop go on to complete the XL course and then progress into dressmaking, home décor or more advanced techniques.
