Beginners Sewing Course XL – Learn to Sew with Confidence
The Beginners Sewing Course XL isn’t just another sewing class. It’s our signature programme – refined over more than a decade of teaching thousands of complete beginners. Available as either an intensive two-day experience or a relaxed six-week course, it’s the programme that has launched more sewing journeys than any other course at Artisan Stitch.
If you’ve always wanted to learn to sew properly, this is the course.
Not a rushed one-day taster. Not a YouTube rabbit hole. Not a class where you copy someone else’s project without really understanding what you’re doing.
This is a carefully structured six-week programme that takes you from complete beginner to confident sewist, one skill at a time.
You’ll leave knowing how to sew, why things work, and – most importantly – with the confidence to keep sewing long after the course has finished.
Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine before, inherited one from a relative, or have one gathering dust in the spare room, this course will finally give you the skills to start using it with confidence.
Why Choose the XL Course?
Our award-winning Beginners Sewing Course has helped thousands of people discover a lifelong love of sewing.
The XL version follows the same proven teaching programme as our hugely popular two-day and 3-day immersive courses, but spreads the learning over six relaxed weekly sessions.
That means you have time to practise between classes, ask questions, build confidence naturally and develop skills that genuinely stay with you.
The XL course also includes two additional projects, giving you around 50% more sewing time, more techniques and considerably more practice than the intensive version.
Many students tell us this slower pace is exactly what helped everything finally “click”.
Perfect For You If…
- You’ve never used a sewing machine before.
- You’ve taught yourself to sew but know there are gaps in your skills and understanding.
- You can already sew a little but would like to understand why techniques work.
- You’re returning to sewing after a break and want to rebuild your confidence.
- You want a solid foundation before moving on to dressmaking or more advanced projects.

- You want to make your own clothes, gifts or home furnishings.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or filling in the gaps, this course gives you the knowledge and confidence to sew independently.
What You’ll Learn
This isn’t simply about making projects.
It’s about building a solid foundation that you’ll use every time you sit down at a sewing machine.
Over six weeks you’ll learn how to:
- Set up and use a sewing machine with confidence.
- Thread the machine and wind bobbins correctly.
- Understand stitch types, tension, stitch length and stitch width.
- Cut fabric accurately and confidently.
- Sew straight lines, curves and neat corners.
- Master three essential seam constructions.
- Finish hems by machine and by hand.
- Insert zips confidently.
- Create professional buttonholes.
- Understand presser feet and when to use them.
- Maintain your sewing machine.
- Repair split seams, tears and missing buttons.
Along the way you’ll pick up countless professional tips, shortcuts and techniques that simply aren’t taught in books.
The Projects You’ll Make
Each project introduces new skills while reinforcing everything you’ve already learned.
You’ll complete:
- A fully lined reversible tote bag
- A professionally finished zipped make-up bag
- An iPad or tablet cover (with tutorial support to complete at home)
All fabrics and materials are included, so you can simply arrive, sit down and enjoy sewing.
Why Thousands of Beginners Have Chosen Artisan Stitch
Choosing where you learn matters.
Artisan Stitch was founded in 2015 by lifelong sewist, Jen Skedd. Before that, Jen spent many years training and mentoring others – experience that shaped the calm, supportive and structured teaching style students value today. Over the past 12 years, she has helped thousands of complete beginners become confident, independent sewists.
Artisan Stitch has received multiple Best Sewing Tuition Provider awards and holds a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of outstanding sewing tuition.
Our Beginners Sewing Courses are also recommended by Queen Margaret University as excellent preparation for students applying to study Home Economics.
Our goal isn’t simply to help you complete three projects. It’s to give you the skills, understanding and confidence to continue sewing successfully long after the course has finished.
Your Learning Doesn’t End After Class
One of the biggest frustrations students tell us about other sewing courses is that once the class finishes…that’s it.
Not here.
Every Artisan Stitch Beginners’ course includes exclusive access to the Artisan Stitch Learning Hub – a growing collection of sewing guides, class notes, video tutorials and expert tips, plus ongoing email support, so your learning continues long after you leave the studio.
So if you forget something six months later, help is still there.
Because great teaching shouldn’t end when the classroom door closes.
What Our Students Say
“XL Beginners = Xtra Learning and Exactly what beginners need. I’ve done other sewing courses but felt they didn’t cover what I needed to know to keep sewing at home. I made things, but came away with so many questions. Now I feel SO much better equipped to keep sewing at home and make real progress. I just wish I’d come to you sooner.”
