Cushion Making Workshop

Create Beautiful Soft Furnishings with Professional Finishes

Join our Cushion Making Workshop in Edinburgh and transform your favourite fabric into a beautiful handmade cushion that you’ll be proud to display in your home.

This practical one-day cushion making workshop will teach you the professional techniques used to create high-quality soft furnishings — including inserting zips, making and adding piping, creating your own coordinating bias binding, and achieving neat, polished finishes.

Whether you want to refresh your home décor, use up a treasured piece of fabric, or simply learn new sewing skills, making your own cushions is a wonderfully satisfying project. Once you know how, you’ll never look at shop-bought cushions in quite the same way!

During the day you’ll learn how to create a beautifully finished cushion cover from your chosen fabric, while developing sewing techniques that can be used in many other projects.

If you’re building your confidence with sewing, our Beginners Sewing Courses are a great place to start before progressing to more specialised sewing classes like this cushion making workshop.

Save Money!

Cushions in those high-end interior shops are so expensive but why pay out when they are actually quite easy to make if you have basic sewing skills. This cushion making workshop  will teach you how to add zip closures, and a piped edge for a professional high end look – all for less than just one cushion in a designer shop. You’ll never need to buy a cushion again.

What you’ll learn in the Cushion Making Workshop

During this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Measure and cut fabric accurately for your cushion.
  • Insert a zip using a standard lapped method or concealed zip technique.
  • Make your own bias binding to perfectly coordinate with your fabric.
  • Create and attach professional-looking piping.
  • Complete your cushion cover with neat finishing techniques.
  • Add those final details that make your handmade cushion look beautifully polished.

A creative day with expert guidance

You’ll be guided step-by-step throughout the day, with plenty of individual support to help you achieve a professional finish.

You’ll leave with a unique handmade cushion cover and the confidence to create more soft furnishings for your home.

Is the Cushion Making workshop suitable for me?

This workshop is ideal if you already have basic sewing skills and want to move beyond simple projects. You’ll learn techniques that can be applied to cushions, bags, home décor projects and many other sewing creations.

Why Thousands of People Have Chosen Artisan Stitch

Choosing where you learn matters.

Before founding Artisan Stitch, Jen spent many years training and mentoring others – experience that shaped the calm, supportive and structured teaching style students value today. Over the past 12 years, she has helped thousands of students become confident, independent sewists.

Artisan Stitch has received multiple Best Sewing Tuition Provider awards and holds a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of outstanding sewing tuition.

Our goal isn’t simply to help you complete projects. It’s to give you the skills, understanding and confidence to continue sewing successfully long after the course has finished.

Your Learning Doesn’t End After Class

One of the biggest frustrations students tell us about other sewing courses is that once the class finishes…that’s it.

Not here.

Artisan Stitch courses include exclusive access to the Artisan Stitch Learning Hub – a growing collection of sewing guides, class notes, video tutorials and expert tips, plus ongoing email support, so your learning continues long after you leave the studio.

So if you forget something six months later, help is still there.

Because great teaching shouldn’t end when the classroom door closes.

What you need to bring

You’ll need to bring your own choice of fabric and a cushion pad. Once you’ve booked your place on our Cushion Making Workshop, I’ll advise you exactly what you’ll need.

You’re welcome to bring your own sewing machine. Otherwise let me know when booking if you’d like to use one of the machines available in the studio.

If bringing your own machine, please remember:

  •  power cable/foot control
  • bobbins
  • instruction manual
  • your zip foot and piping foot (sometimes the same thing)

For sewing machines and accessories (zip and piping feet), Artisan Stitch recommends Pembertons Sewing Machine Centre.
