Workshops Crafts Dressmaking Course – Evenings

If you’re looking for a dressmaking course in Edinburgh that helps you take your sewing further, this friendly evening class is the perfect next step. Taught by guest tutor Michela Fulgoni at Artisan Stitch, it’s ideal for confident beginners and improvers who want to develop real garment‑construction skills with expert guidance.

This course is not for absolute beginners. It’s designed for adults who already have the basics and want to build confidence, accuracy and technique.

Course runs every Tuesday 4, 11, 18 & 25 August.  

Who this Dressmaking course is for

This dressmaking course in Edinburgh is ideal for adults who already have basic sewing skills and want to improve their garment‑construction techniques.

You should already be able to:

• Use a sewing machine confidently
• Complete 2–3 sewing projects (simple craft items with seams, hems and neatened edges)
• Sew zips and buttonholes (we don’t want your first attempt going into your new clothes!)

If you’re not quite there yet, start with one of the Foundation Sewing courses at Artisan Stitch first. They’ll give you the essential skills to join this course comfortably. Many students join this course after completing one of Artisan Stitch’s foundation sewing classes in Edinburgh.

What you’ll learn

Taught by guest tutor Michela Fulgoni, this Edinburgh sewing course focuses on proper technique, fitting and finishing. Under Michela’s expert tuition, you’ll learn the key dressmaking techniques that turn homemade garments into beautifully finished, wearable clothes.

You’ll be guided step‑by‑step through:

• Choosing a pattern suitable for your level
• Understanding pattern markings, symbols and instructions
• Taking accurate body measurements
• Cutting fabric correctly and economically
• Fitting and making adjustments for a better shape
• Altering patterns or garments for style and comfort
• Sewing techniques that make your garments look handmade not homemade

This is a practical, hands‑on course where you’ll work on your own chosen project and receive individual support throughout.

What you can make

To help you succeed within the 4‑week format, we recommend choosing a simple, wearable garment suitable for a first or second dressmaking project. Popular options include:

• Pyjama trousers or shorts
• A kimono-style dressing gown
• Cargo trousers with simple details
• An A‑line skirt

Pattern suggestions will be provided when you book, so you can choose something achievable and enjoyable.

Dressmaking Course format

• Small group size for plenty of individual help
• Bring your own garment project: a commercial pattern, an upcycling challenge, or alterations
• Michela will guide you on sizing, fitting, cutting, and sewing techniques as you work
• Suitable for adults who want to improve their dressmaking skills in a friendly, supportive studio environment in Edinburgh

What to bring

Please bring:

• Your chosen pattern (we can provide suggestions if you need help to choose)
• Fabric, matching thread and any extras (interfacing, zips, buttons, etc.)
• Calico or sheeting for a toile (if needed)
• Pattern paper
• A basic sewing kit:

  • Paper scissors
  • Small embroidery scissors
  • Tape measure (cm)
  • Fabric marking pencils/pens
  • Pins

Sewing machines are available in the studio, or you’re welcome to bring your own.
