Exploring the shifting relationship between land, sea, memory and material, Headwind brings together the work of Aileen A. Paton, Jacqueline Higgs, Nicola Beckett, Irina Stancheva and Louise Todhunter.
Inspired in part by the remote landscape and traces of human presence encountered on the now-uninhabited Stroma island, the exhibition reflects on how a sense of place can be carried, transformed and reimagined. Mixed-media paintings and glass works respond to landscape not as fixed territory, but as something constantly altered by weather, time, movement and memory.
A headwind is a force encountered rather than avoided — shaping direction, slowing progress, and demanding a different way forward. Across the works, it becomes both a physical presence and a metaphor for resistance, change and the unpredictable currents that shape our experience.
